Passat V6TDI Lubrication Service. AKA oil change.

Tools:

10mm socket
32mm socket
#8 flat head screwdriver- stubby-
small flat blade screw driver
19mm spanner.
Car ramps or even caravan levelling ramps.

suitable container to catch oil.

VW charge £99 for this, and they only suck the engine oil out! Naughty naughty..

The problem or pita is the under tray on mine, but this easy method is ace.

1. Full right hand lock, pop in the stubby#8 flat blade and remove the 2 liner screws in the front arches.
2. Full left hand lock and do the same.
3. Pull car up ramps enough to get to the back screws of the under tray, but don't remove yet.
4 Undo centre bolt 10mm on under tray 1st. Either side of tray at fron ar 2 flat heads, undo and remove.
5. Work at back of tray and remove the 3 bolts. Drop under tray and note the how the under tray goes togethor at the front of the car. i.e it slips under the lower edge of the spoiler, then remove and put under the car at the rear.
6 Sump plug sits opposite the passenger wheel to the right, so slide your container under neath. Expect 5.4L of oil. PITA#2. You won't get a socket on the plug, so ring spanner time. Crack off clockwise, and drain her down.

7. Move to top of engine and remove engine cover held on with 4 x 10mm bolts. Go easy on these fella's as they seize and rip the rubber sandwhich's.
8. oil filters screwed down with a 32mm socket and undo anti clockwise. When you lift the black top off, the paper element will come with it, so be prep'd for oil in it.
9. Remove o ring off the cap and replace with new one which is in the kit supplied by VW.
10. Insert back in, and tighten to specified torque as on top of filter housing.
11. Oil should be out now, so refit plug with new copper washer supplied in filter kit, and tighten up. Wipe clean around the plug anally, as if you've not tightened this fella up, bye bye oil!
12. Drop in 400ml of oil from small container and wait a few mins. Now check the plug for leaks, hence the requirement for anal cleaning of this area.
13. Put the 5L of oil in and start up and aim for normal operating temp. Check for leaks again.
14. Replace pita Under tray starting at the front first with the 10mm bolt.
15 Replace engine cover, wipe clean, and feel chuffed you've saved £65 by doing this yourself.

I write in the service book the date and invoice number.

I used the VW filter made by Hengst for the AKN engine which included O ring and copper washer for sump and 6L of Synta Oil by VW using only 5.4L.

What do you do with your waste oil?

We've got know where close at to dispose of it, tends to get poured into an empty container, and hidden in the wheelie bin.

Local tip takes it for recycling. Just pour in.
Neighbour used to creosote fence/sheds with it. Synta smells though, even used.. i'd pass on that one.
