Miles per Gallon improvers. Got any?

I have a few tips for improving mpg, but do you have any?

Fit a flat panel filter. Yes they give you more bhp, but on a TDI engine, they will also improve spool up and low end pick up. Therefore you can drive your diesel off boost more and get better mpg.

Switch Aircon off. Aircon-pressor loads the engine. This give 3 to 5 mpg more switched off!

Remove Roof bars. The Cross rails hold you back, disturb the air and cause you to use fuel.

Switch Cruise off. Yep, another winner but an ankle acher.

My V6TDI at 70, everything on as above. 33mpg. switch off as above 39 mpg. At 60mph, 42 mpg. Big difference isn't it?
Snow what if you jump a 50 ft cliff..
Snow what if schuss a 50degree couloir...
... Cos it really doesn't matter...

Obvious one, but drive more slowly.

From our house to Shrewsbury is abour 18 miles up the A49. If I go steady and follow the lorries I can get nearly 50mpg by the time I get to the A5 roundabout. If I charge on and overtake everyone I get about 35mpg. Time saved by driving faster.......hardly anything because the lorry that I overtook 15 miles ago has just caught me up at the traffic lights.

Another one is to read the road ahead. Drive so that you dont have to brake, and use your momentum to keep the car rolling rather than having to use too much throttle. Coasting where possible in gear uses no fuel at all as the wheels drive the engine, whereas if you roll down hill in neutral the engine needs fuel to keep itself turning over.

And one that I have adopted recently, dont drive anywhere if you dont need to. I used to just jump in the car and drive off whenever I felt like it, but now I am more mindfull of how much it costs to go somewhere. Last year I only did 9000 miles in my Passat rather the 15000 the year before just by not doing unecessary journey's. Thats a saving of alot more than fuel.
