1989 Mk2 GTI

He she is, home at last.

I gave it a quick wash to have a closer look at what I had bought, and it all looks pretty good.

The front valance has been replaced, but not fittted very well, or painted for that matter, the bonnet needs repainting, and a couple of minor dings need sorting, but apart from that it aint too bad.

Inside it need a drivers seat cos the side bolsters are worn, but there are a set on the bay at the moment. Can I make a passenger seat fit the drivers side? There are also one or two bits of trim missing, but nothing that I wont find in the srcapper over the next few months.

Well chuffed with the wheels. They came up a treat with a good wash, although they have suffered a bit of kerb rash. Nothing a refurb wont sort out. The tow bar will have to go, and I've just bought a set of 16V rear lights. I like the ones that are on, but prefer oem better.

Not too sure about the suspension. It has a kit of unknown whereabouts, and sits too low at the back. I'm going to do a quick fix with some towing spring assistors for now, then invest in a new set upwhen the wife allows.

To be fair, the paints not half bad at all. The bonnet is the worst. It has been repainted poorly and needs redoing and the roof needs a good polishing. I need to get the front valance sorted, so I'll get it done at the same time. I'll probably get rid of the aerial hole on the wing as well.

I'm going to look at an interior tomorrow. I need to sort out the drivers seat, and get some front door pockets as well.

One other thing that I have got to fix before it drives me mad is the shaking speedo. I have been told it needs a new cable £20, or possibly a speedo head. I've been looking at clocks on ebay, and am not sure if I have the right ones. Mine only reads up to 120mph, whereas there are also 140 & 160mph ones. Anybody know?

I'd change the cable. sound like it's dry inside..

Just had a bit of a browse and found out that the original top speed was 115mph. I would have expected the speedo to show higher than 120.

That's why I wonder if I have the right one.

sorry, but is it a valver?? they were a bit lower at the back.you gotta allow for sag..............just like now,at your age!

as for the speedo........cable,check the gear inside the box,cos they can wear too.there used to be an overhaul kit for 'em.worst case the diff could be moving, hardly likely tho as it would prob have blown up by now.

nice car tho, think i may have an original side stripe somewhere.

oh,and a kit for a mk 1 driver too!!!

No, she's an 8 valve.

Suits me though cos I'd forgotten how to drive a petrol. You can drive this one really nice at half throttle and change up at about 3500rpm. No need to rush the old girl.

Fitted some new door pockets last night. I love it. You can take the door panel off with just one philips screwdriver, and in the dark :) How easy is that? I remebemer trying to fix the plastic window clip on by Mk4. Arhhhhhhh

Got rid on the alloy door pins and mirror adjusters and replaced them with stock too.
